Barbara Andrus
Something from Nothing, 2021
Installation with knitting and cloth
For Barbara Andrus, making something from nothing – sewing scraps and fabric discards from friends – suits the moment. During this COVID 19 calamity sewing took on much more intensity and meaning for her. Much of the cloth in Andrus’ installation was en route to becoming a quilt. Dissatisfied with that outcome, however, Andrus instead disassembled the quilt in progress and exploded it to fill the gallery.
Floating among the pieces of the deconstructed quilt hangs a length of knitting that Andrus begin in 2013 during one of her many walks. Andrus has used this growing length over the years in multiple creative incarnations. The now 150 foot knit length stretches through the gallery space implying Andrus’ emotional journey through the wreckage of the pandemic.
